Sgt. Frank L. Carbaugh died in France in 1918. He died with honor in the service of his country on August 1, 1918. He was wounded in the battle of Marne in June of 1918 while operating a machine gun.
He was laid to rest in Cedar Hill Cemetery west of Greencastle. He was the first local resident killed in WWI.
